Flagship Projects
Croydon Gardens
Value: R 14,75m
Location: Croydon Gardens, Croydon
Description: Bulk Earthworks, Demolition & Roads and Services
Consultant: Ingerop SA
This project was implemented in 2 phases, over a period of 2 years. The first phase being the rehabilitation of the site, which had been a dumping ground over many years, also included demolition of buildings on the site. This project was tendered in June 2017 but was only awarded in Feb 2018. Originally the tender included all the services, but only the rehab portion was initially awarded to a value of R2.473m. The final value ended up at R5.796m, which included security on the site for a period of 2 years.
The most challenging part of this project was to have 12 families evicted, that had been living on the site for a long time. This process required temporary relocation of these families, by erecting a housing settlement off the site. Once that had been implemented, the work commenced, and was completed on 1 August 2018.
We removed 7220m3 of rubble and debris off the site and imported 8150m3 of G7 filling. We also moved 5420m2 of bulk fill on the site.
The Employer on this phase of the project was JV Wilnet, and the Consulting Engineer was ICE Group from Durbanville.
The second Phase was negotiated with CROYDON GARDENS DEVELOPMENT (PTY)Ltd and was awarded on 14th Feb 2020, to a value of R13.050m. The Contract period was 21 weeks and the Consulting Engineer was INGEROP.
This phase of the project was for the installation of Roads and services, a sewer pump station, and an environmental stormwater system. The project was situated alongside the Eerste River, and required serious flood line design work, which included 1000m of subsurface drainage and a large overflow dam.
We installed 7400m2 of brickpaving and the project was completed on time and within budget.
An extension to this project was the upgrading of the intersection of R102(Eerste River road) and Kramat Road, building additional lanes at the intersection, installing new sidewalks and upgrading the Traffic signals. The value of this work amounted to R1m

Wild-Olive Estate
Value: R 9,34m
Location: Wild-Olive Estate, Brackenfell
Description: Roads and Services
Consultant: Lyners and Associates
This Project was negotiated with the Developer, CAPE ESTATES PROPERTIES PENINSULA(PTY)Ltd, who is also the Building Contractor on the Project. The Project is a residential development providing 48 double storey units, situated in Protea Heights, Brackenfell. The Consulting Engineers was Neil Lyners & Associates (PTY)Ltd.
The work entailed the installation of Civil Engineering Services, Stormwater detention Pond and associated Structures, Bulk Earthworks, Brick-paved Roads & Re-inforced Concrete and Block Retaining Walls. The Project period was 5 months and was completed at the end of March 2021. The Value of the Contract amounted to R9.75m and was completed within Budget and on time.
There was a number of challenges we faced on this project. The site is situated on a steep slope, and as a result, some of the roads was designed at very steep gradients (up to 17%). We encountered a substantial amount of rock during the excavation of the roads and services, as well as the retaining wall excavations(350m3). The stormwater system was designed to drain into a Detention Pond which is situated at the lowest end of the site, which required substantial dewatering to install the foundations of the structures. The close proximity of adjacent houses required really careful compaction methods to prevent damage to the buildings. The Electrical Contract was completed in conjunction with our programme.
Summerhill Drive
Value: R 22,7m
Location: Sir Lowry’s Pass Road, Somerset West
Description: Roadwork and Dam Construction
Consultant: Ingerop & ICE Group
This project was negotiated with The Collins Group (The Client) and Lazercor (Project Manager), and commenced in August 2018. It forms part of the bigger MZURI Development, situated between Sir Lowry’s Pass Road, and Bizweni Avenue, Somerset West. The value of the project amounted to R22.7m, was completed within the 8 month contractual period, and within budget. The Consulting Engineers were ICE Group and Ingerop.
The scope of work was to relocate an existing retention dam which was situated on the site, to allow for the construction of Summerhill Drive Road, which provides the main access to the Estate.
The main challenge was to relocate the dam in the middle of winter while maintaining the flow throughout the process. We designed a diversion, which allowed us to breach the existing wall and relocate to it’s final position. The infrastructure in the dam included stormwater pipes ranging up to 1050mm at the outlet, and a subsurface drainage system to direct low flow stormwater into the outlet system.
Once the construction of the dam wall had been completed, we commenced with the earthworks and services for the main road, as well as the widening of 3 slip lanes on the Sir Lowry’s Pass/Un ion Drive Intersection.
The traffic signalling at the intersection has been upgraded to allow for the additional entrance to the Estate.
The dam wall was constructed using 370m³ of gabions, 3700m³ of imported structural fill, and on-site fill material of 3000m³.

Altona Residentail Village Worcester, Aerial View
Buh Rein Retirement Village Phase 1
Value: R 5,2m
Location: Kraaifontein
Description: Roads and stormwater structures
Consultant: Robert Leslie Consulting Engineers
This contract was awarded, following a successful tender process, to complete roads and surfacing on the Estate. The underground services had previously been installed by a different Contractor. The Employer was BUH-REIN Property Developers, owned by Multi Spectrum Properties (PTY) Ltd, a large South African Developer. The Consultant was Robert Leslie Consulting Engineers and the value of the project amounted to R5.147m, with a project duration of 20 weeks.
What was really challenging on this project, was the fact that the underground services had to be located and exposed, and in some cases repaired, before we could commence with the final road works. The site was also very congested as the Building Contractor was busy with the finishing of the buildings. Access was very limited, and we had to accommodate the builder on a continuous basis. The water table in the area was also very high, which caused some challenges in relocation of services.
We installed 8800m² of interlocking paving and the project was completed on time.
Jackal River Weir Rehabilitation
Value: R 1,325m
Location: Bot River
Description: Rehabilitation of Concrete Weir
Consultant: KLS Engineers
This project required the rehabilitation of the existing dam wall in the Jackal River, situated close to the Houwhoek Hotel. The existing weir had been badly damaged and washed away in a major flood a few years earlier. The original weir was built in the ‘60’s.
The Contract was awarded by FRUITWAYS FARMING, and amounted to R1.132m, with a project period of 8 weeks. The Consultant on the project was KLS Consulting Engineers.
As a result of the existing weir being situated in the River, we had to divert the River to allow for construction of the Sluice Structure, including the demolition of the existing wall. The breached sections had to be blocked off with reinforced concrete walls, after which we imported structural fill, capped by a concrete overflow slab. This was all done while the river was flowing via the Sluice Structure, through the existing pipe that had been installed in the original contract.
Mountain Crest Residential Developement
Value: R 19m
Location: Paarl
Description: Roads & Services
Consultant: Zutari
The Mountain Crest Development, situated near Klein Parys Development in Paarl, is a residential property development consisting of 105 erven. The site is close to the Berg River and has easy access to the N1 Highway. The final housing product consists of 158m2 single residential houses, within a security estate.
The Employer was Minprop Property(PTY)Ltd, and the Consulting Engineers was ZUTARI(PTY)Ltd from Paarl. The tender process was by invitation, and following a robust period of negotiation, DP2 was appointed to the value of R19 141 163.04. This value excluded the cost of Electrical installation, which was arranged directly by the Employer, but DP2 was responsible for the management of the Electrical works to align with the master program. This process was seamless, and the project was handed to the Client on time within the 22week Construction period.
An interesting process was required to consolidate the previously ploughed farmland, being a Rapid Impact Compaction method. The ground was recompacted to a depth of 1.5m deep with a specialist Contractor. The area that was compacted was 23 740m² and was successfully done by RIC Africa within the allotted 20days.
The project consisted of site clearance of 3.7ha, including the removal of more than 300 pine trees and 2.2ha of fruit orchard. In addition to these works, the bulk earthworks amounted to 16 000m3. Underground services amounted to 7 820m, and the roadwork totalled 9500m2, which was all paved with 70mm exposed aggregate interlockers. An external bulk 250mm dia HDPE watermain was also installed for the municipal network to provide sufficient potable water to the site.
Through clever process engineering, we managed to save the client a substantial sum on the contract which also assisted in achieving the really tight programme schedule, and the quality of the work met the client’s high standards.
This contract was completed within Budget and the building of the houses has progressed very well.
